AvoZen
Portable Meditation For College Student
Portable Meditation Device
8 Week Project · Solo · 2022
Industrial Design · User Research · Product Development
A compact handheld device designed to support stress reduction through guided breathing and tactile interaction.
THE IDEA
Designing a tactile meditation companion for everyday stress.
AvoZen is a handheld meditation device created for college students navigating academic pressure, social expectations, and digital overload. Rather than relying on screen-based mindfulness apps, the project explores how physical interaction and breathing can be guided through form and movement.
The object resembles an avocado — soft, organic, and approachable. Its rounded body encourages cradling with both hands, reinforcing a sense of grounding and containment.
THE EXPERIENCE
AvoZen operates through breath and movement.
Users hold the device with both hands and exhale toward the pinwheel on top. The spinning motion provides immediate visual feedback, reinforcing controlled breathing. Guided audio meditations further support relaxation and focus.
The device offers two modes:
• Guided meditation sessions
• Visual breathing synchronization mode
The interaction is intentionally simple — no complex interface, no screen, no notifications.
Design Process
DESIGN STRATEGY
The form draws inspiration from organic shapes found in nature. The avocado metaphor communicates nourishment, softness, and calm.
The pinwheel acts as both:
• A breathing indicator
• A playful kinetic element
This duality transforms breathing into something visible and interactive.
The compact size allows portability, fitting easily into a backpack — making it suitable for dorm rooms, libraries, or outdoor campus spaces.

DESIGN PROCESS
The project began with research on student stress patterns and behavioral triggers. Initial prototypes explored:
• Stress balls
• Rotational breathing devices
• Portable audio meditation tools
Through iteration, the design evolved toward combining tactile grounding with visible breath feedback — leading to the final avocado-inspired form.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns about mental health and substance use have grown. In January 2021, 41% of adults reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder. The mental health of college students across the U.S. has consistently increased for all eight years of data analyzed, with an overall 135 % increase in depression and a 110 % increase in anxiety from 2013 to 2021.

REFLECTION
AvoZen represents an early exploration into designing for emotional regulation through physical interaction.
Rather than designing a smart product, the focus was on designing a gentle companion — one that reduces friction and encourages mindful pauses throughout a student’s day.
The project raises a broader question:
How can product design move beyond utility and support mental well-being through form, feedback, and ritual?
