Mascara for Hand Tremor

Adaptive Mascara for Users with Hand Tremor

8 Week Project · Solo · 2022
Industrial Design · Ergonomic Research · Form Development

A mascara designed to improve stability, grip control, and confidence for users with hand tremors.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Magic Wand rethinks conventional cosmetic packaging through the lens of accessibility.

Standard mascara handles are slim and cylindrical, requiring precise finger control. For individuals with hand tremors, this narrow grip can increase instability and reduce confidence during application.

This project explores how ergonomic form and structural support can improve usability while maintaining aesthetic elegance.

DESIGN PROBLEM

Conventional mascara packaging prioritizes visual minimalism and slender form, often at the expense of grip stability.

Users with hand tremors experience:

  • Reduced fine motor control

  • Slippage during rotation

  • Difficulty aligning brush to lashes

  • Increased anxiety during use

The challenge was to design a mascara that enhances control without appearing clinical or medical.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The product integrates three primary considerations:

1. Ergonomic Grip

The handle features a curved, widened geometry that fits naturally into the palm, allowing a more secure hold and reduced reliance on finger precision.

2. Stabilized Application

The form encourages whole-hand support rather than fingertip control, minimizing rotational instability.

3. Emotional Comfort

The display structure adopts a birdcage-inspired form — symbolizing protection and safety — creating a gentle and reassuring product presence.

The design avoids medicalized aesthetics, instead maintaining a refined cosmetic identity.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

The form language was inspired by:

  • Flowing organic curves

  • Spirals and wave geometries

  • Natural materials and softened edges

A mood board guided the exploration of elegance through curvature rather than sharp mechanical precision.

Multiple foam and 3D prototypes were tested to refine:

  • Grip diameter

  • Weight distribution

  • Balance point

  • Visual proportion

PRODUCT IN USE

User scenario testing focused on:

  • One-handed application

  • Stability during wrist tremor simulation

  • Visual alignment of brush tip

  • Perceived confidence while applying

The widened, sculpted handle significantly reduced perceived instability compared to conventional slim tubes.

OUTCOME

Magic Wand demonstrates how inclusive design can be integrated into mainstream cosmetic products without sacrificing aesthetics.

By shifting from fingertip precision to palm-supported stability, the design improves usability while maintaining brand-level refinement.

The project highlights how subtle form changes can significantly impact confidence and independence in everyday rituals.
